Bulk Email Deliverability Issues |
| |
What if the email that you so carefully designed and spent money and time in creating never reaches its destination? How can you make sure that they reach their intended
recipient and be not caught together in some folder with other spam emails that will most likely be deleted after a few days? With the increase of spam emails, anti-spam
measures that are being employed by email service providers and even people who own the addresses themselves also increased. One thing that is very negative about all
these is that inadvertently, legitimate emails are being filtered or blocked out as well.
In choosing a software or service that will handle your bulk email, you should choose one that addresses the issue of having your email rejected by anti-spam software.
Another reason for poor email deliverability is bounce. Bounce happens when the email sent is returned to the sender. There are many reasons for the email bouncing. Two of the most common reasons for an email bouncing are the permanent technical problem with the recipient’s address and the temporary technical problem with delivering the
mail.
So how do you improve email deliverability? For emails that bounce, you are provided with the feedback which contains information about the problem. You can then remedy
the problem and can send the email again. In the case of anti-spam software blocking your emails, you can employ bulk email best practices to lessen the chances of this
happening.
The following are ways that you can improve your Bulk Email deliverability: Clean up Your List - As an email marketer, you should always make it a point to clean your
mailing list regularly. You should only be emailing people who are either customers who have agreed to receive messages or people who have signed up to your list with full
knowledge of what you are sending. You should go through your list and remove email addresses where sent emails are bouncing for any number of reasons and you should
also check for and honor opt-out or unsubscribe requests. You should also never buy or rent email lists.
Check the Blacklists – You should regularly check blacklists to see if your domain/email server has been listed as spam. These blacklists are prone to mistakes and you
could inadvertently end up on one by no fault of your own. Most of the major blacklists have procedures in place that will help you remove your domain/email server off the
list. There are a lot of blacklists online but you can check out these two to have an idea if you are on a list somewhere and how you can get off of that list. your domain/email server removed.
Turn off Open Relays – Open Relays allow anyone on the internet to send any email through your server. That is very disastrous as spammers can use your email domain t
send spam and cause it to be blocked. This will result in your being in a blacklist and have your legitimate email campaign bounce from the email addresses on your mailing
list. You can check if your server is an open relay by clicking this link http://spamlinks.net/prevent-secure-relay-test.htm#web and find a web based tester. Use Domain
Keys Identified Mail (DKIM) – Domain Keys Identified Mail I an email authentication method that is independent of the SMTP service. This service adds a header to all email that is sent from your server that has a key in it. The receiving server, if then set up to recognize DKIM, will do a DNS lookup with the key on the header to make sure that the email originated from your server. With this method, the receiving server can be sure that the email they are receiving is not forged by someone else and can set up filters to lower any spam scores to help the email avoid any automatic spam tagging. Use Sender Policy Framework (SPF) - Sender Policy Framework allows an email server administrator to give the means for other servers to verify that a server is authorized to send email for a certain domain. This is done by using a TXT DNS record that lists the authorized senders for that domain. The receiving sender can then decide to either reject the email based on a failure or apply a certain score that in combination with other factors will either mark your email as spam or not. Get into the Yahoo Whitelist - Yahoo has a certain procedure in place that will get companies that qualify into an internal whitelist.
This allows emails from these companies to go into the customer’s inbox instead of the spam folder. There are a lot of things that Yahoo require for you to get into their whitelist and it may take some time for them to review your qualifications. But if you qualify and get into their whitelist, it is well worth the wait to insure that your emails get into your mailing list’s inboxes.
Get into the AOL Whitelist – Like Yahoo, AOL has a similar system whitelist that you can get on. They have a different set of requirements and criteria from Yahoo, but being on their whitelist is worth the trouble. Create a Sender ID Framework - Microsoft is also involved in email authentication because of the prevalence of Hotmail, MSN, and Live users. Creating a Sender ID Framework is then very important and can help you with your email marketing campaign. |
