Bulk Email Service Providers |

The bulk email method is generally determined by the number of emails and the number of recipients. For a single bulk email being sent to less than 100 recipients, a personal or business email account may suffice. For example, Microsoft Outlook allows a user to create a “group” alias with which the user can associate a number of email addresses. Sending an email to the group alias will distribute the email to all recipients noted as belonging to the group. Typically, a company seeks to email many thousands of people and requires a more robust solution. Datran Media published the, “2008 Annual Marketing & Media Survey Results,” in which it surveyed 2,000 marketers.
For large companies, an email service provider (ESP) may be the best choice as it often provides the greatest level of customization. In addition to the functionality provided by bulk email software, an email service provider may provide specialized design services to further tailor the look and feel of a bulk email. An email service provider will generally send the bulk emails using their own ISP on a company’s behalf. Bulk email software can be purchased that will manage a database of contacts, create bulk email message templates, send bulk emails periodically, |

Consider Bulk Email Needs and the Variety of Bulk Email Service Providers |

| Bulk emailing can be a quick and effective way to distribute information to a large group of recipients. To ensure an effective bulk email campaign, first assess how many emails and recipients will be emailed. Based on this assessment, next consider whether personal email, bulk email software, or an email service provider is appropriate.
Broadly defined as a company providing email services, an email service provider (ESP) offers email marketing or bulk email services. Neither of these terms are intended to be synonymous with spam or the sending of unwanted or unsolicited bulk email of a marketing or otherwise offensive nature.
An ESP may provide tracking information showing the status of email sent to each member of an address list. ESPs also often provide the ability to segment an address list into interest groups or categories, allowing the user to send targeted information to people who they believe will value the correspondence. |

An ESP will provide a service which may include the following features: |

1. Ability to create templates for sending to contacts and/or the use of templates pre-made

2. A subscriber list, which is uploaded by the user for distributing messages. This may be enhanced with custom fields in order to hold additional information for each subscriber for filtering and targeted messaging purposes

3. A send engine, which allows users to distribute their message to the subscribers

4. Updating of the subscriber list to suppress those requesting to be unsubscribed

5. Statistical reviews of each email sent to measure the success rate of the campaigns

6. Testing of templates for compatibility with email applications

7. Spam testing to gauge the score of the email against known factors that will place the template at risk of being blocked

8. The ability to send both html and plain text formats to improve delivery success rates (known as Multi-Part MIME)

The level of service provided can be according to the above basic features, or the number of subscribers uploaded, or the frequency of use – or any combination of the above criteria.

ESPs typically have terms and conditions (such as an Acceptable Use Policy) to prevent abuse by users in order to ensure that no spam is sent through their systems. This is intended to result in the best possible delivery rates, with no messages blocked as spam. Some ESPs work with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to ensure compliance with legalislation and best practices, through organizations such as the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group.

There are over 200 ESPs in the marketplace, each with their own specific offerings and value proposition. According to Forrester Research, there are approximately 15 "Tier 1" providers, which will be analyzed in their upcoming Forrester Wave
