The Preparation of Mail for Bulk Mailing |
| |
| Bulk mailing provides a way for individuals and small business to save money on postage. Bulk or Standard Class mailing is the term applied to Non-Profit or First Class mailings of 200 pieces or more. The U.S. Post Office provides an opportunity that allows the customer to preform sorting and bundling procedures that save the USPS labor costs. They pass the savings on to you in the form of discounted postage rates. If you regularly post large volumes of monthly statements, invoices, form letters or sales fliers, consider bulk mail. Over time, the savings are substantial. |
| |
Bulk Standard Class Mail |
| |
Standard Class is the most commonly used form of bulk mailing. To qualify for a bulk mailing price (the USPS now refers to price rather than rate), the mailing must consist of at least 200 individual pieces weighing four ounces or less. If each identical piece weighs more than four ounces, an exception is made for the required number of pieces if the total weighs a minimum of 50 pounds. Other than the name and address of the recipient, Standard Class can not contain any personalized information.
Statements, invoices or bills and other material in which each recipient receives a different piece of mail is not eligible for Standard Class bulk mail pricing. (You can still receive a discounted postage price for this type of mail if you send them as presorted First Class, however, the price is not as economical as if they were sent Standard Class. You must have a minimum of 500 pieces of mail to qualify for a pre-sorted First Class price on postage.) |

Benefits Of Bulk Mailing |
| |
| Both the USPS and the mailer benefit from bulk mailing. The customer saves money by doing some of the work that post office employees would normally handle. There are many types of mail processing software that is employed by business across the country to facilitate mail handling. In turn, the US Postal Service saves man-hours, costs are reduced and you pay less postage. |
| |
Bulk Mailing Procedures |
| |
Bulk mailing processing requires that you prepare and deliver your mail to the USPS according to rules and requirements and complete all required documentation. The rules for all types of bulk mail are a bit confusing; 500 pieces for First-Class Mail. 200 pieces (or 50 pounds of mail) for Standard Mail, 50 pieces for Parcel Post, 300 pieces for Presorted or Carrier Route Bound Printed Matter, 300 pieces for Presorted Library Mail, 300 pieces for Presorted Media Mail (sometimes called "book rate").
In order to mail at commercial bulk rates you are required to obtain a mailing permit from the USPS and pay an annual mailing fee. Postage may be paid by precanceled stamps, permit imprint or metered postage. Presort the mail by ZIP codes, ensuring that the addresses are accurate. You must then deliver the mail to the US Postal office that issued your mailing permit. These simple procedures can result in significant postage savings. |
